Introduction:

As part of this mahi, the aim is to build a Treaty of Waitangi community grounded in respect, inclusion, and courageous learning. Diverse experiences and views are welcome — and all members are expected to uphold these shared principles.

Our Community Commitments

  1. Come with a desire to learn
We expect all participants to approach Treaty learning and professional development with curiosity, openness, and humility.
  2. Ask, don’t attack
Ask questions that foster dialogue. Challenge ideas, not people. Avoid tearing down views just because they’re different from your own.
  3. Respect different experiences
Acknowledge that people bring varied levels of understanding. Avoid assumptions about what others should know or feel and recognise the value of lived and cultural experience.
  4. Use inclusive language
Refrain from using discriminatory, offensive, or dismissive language — whether intentional or not. If unsure, ask or learn.
  5. Embrace discomfort as part of growth
Agree to sit with discomfort when engaging in conversations about privilege, power, colonisation, and identity. Discomfort is not the same as harm.
  6. Protect personal and cultural sharing
Stories, identities, and perspectives shared within this space must stay confidential unless explicit permission is given to share them.
  7. Be mindful of space
If you tend to speak often, make space for others. If you tend to hold back, know that your voice is valued.
  8. Be open to feedback
Mistakes are part of learning. If you receive feedback, take it as an opportunity to grow, not a personal attack.
